George Daniel Harper, 70, of Harrisville WV departed this life on Sunday, July 9, 2017 at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, WV.

He was born Jan. 14, 1947 in Glenville, WV, a son of the late Gladys and Lewis Harper. Preceding him in death were 2 sisters and 8 brothers. Surviving are his wife, of 46 years, Sharon Harper; a sister, Josephine Brown of Roanoke, WV and a brother, Bill Harper of Geneva, Ohio.

George was a soft spoken man, who expressed volumes with his artwork and cartoons. He had a wonderful gift for creating art and pursued that passion endlessly throughout his entire life. His paintings and landscape pottery has been collected widely throughout the world. In later years, he created some 800+ weekly cartoons for 2 award winning hometown newspapers; The Glenville Democrat and the Ritchie Gazette. He never retired from doing what he loved best. As wished, even his final cartoon appears in his hometown newspaper.

His lifetime of artwork on canvas and pottery features over 4000+ WV paintings including: a series of rural WV landscapes, and a series of river boats on the Ohio River. George and wife Sharon also enjoyed many summers painting a series of watercolors of the quaint coastal fishing villages along the Atlantic near Peggy's Cove, Maine and coastline of Nova Scotia. His favorite and final series, which features the beauty of small local country churches, was painted in memory of his beloved mother and simply titled “SPIRITUAL GLOW”.

He was honored with the distinguished rank of “Professor Emeritus” for his dedication in teaching future teachers and for his outstanding accomplishments and numerous awards in multiple art fields.

In honoring George's wishes his cremated remains will be placed near where his parents now rest. There will be a family/friends graveside memorial at the Harper family plot in the Stalnaker Cemetery in Glenville WV, tentatively set for 12:00 noon on Saturday, July 22. Raiguel Funeral Home, Harrisville assisted the family.
